Hiking adventures with forest friends

Crazy dance and an interview with the Forest pirates

It was about time to do a serious hike again with our outdoors group of the Forest pirates. Kids from 3 to 7 years old participated this time and as always we had a great adventure.

The chosen goal was a 676m high Grmada. Not so visited neighbor of Ljubljana’s famous recreational point – Šmarna gora. Before we left from our pirate camp, we had a vote on which way to take. It was raining a day before and we were expecting the path to be muddy and slippery. The decision was quick, everyone voted the same. Take the easy, gradually ascending trail up and go down the steep one, preferably sliding down on our butts. We love the giant forest muddy slides.

We were all in a really good mood and there was lots of jokes and laughter all the way up. We also had fun identifying the plants, especially the flowers that are in a full spring bloom.

When you hike with a group of kids you need to take time. Lots of time. One spots something. We stop. We move a few steps forward. Someones shoelaces need to be tightened. We stop. We move again. Someone needs to take the jacket off. We wait. When he is ready to go, someone else decides that it is too cold and wants to put a jacket on. We wait again. We move. Few of the kids run ahead, one of the younger ones wants to catch them. She falls. We stop again. The ones who ran ahead come back to see what happened. In the meantime someone spots a bug on the floor. The one who fell stops crying immediately and runs to see, everyone else joins. 5 minutes pass and all attention is on the bug. Someone finally gets up, you think you are going to move finally, but then he says: ” I am hungry, I think we should stop for a snack. “

Yep… slowly but surely… with lots of exploring, we made it to the top of Grmada and did a happy dance to chase the clouds away and call the sun.

Tok, da boste vedli komu se lahko zahvalite za jutrišnje sonce. 😁😁😁 🌞

Hiking rules by the Forest pirates

We talked about the rules we should all follow when hiking in the mountains. The kids came up with the ones below. Did they miss any standard ones? They definitely added some 🙂

Forest fairy: YOU ONLY GO AS HIGH AS YOU WANT. ALWAYS DECIDE FOR YOURSELF. NEVER GO JUST BECAUSE OTHERS GO.

Little constructor: ALWAYS TAKE YOUR TRASH BACK DOWN IN YOUR BACKPACK.

Big pirate: And what if there are bins, lets say in the mountain hut.?

Brainstormer: Maybe then you can leave it. Maybe… But then someone else has to take them down.

Sunny kid: Some mountain huts have cable cars to bring stuff up and down. But still. It would be more fair if every person would always take their own trash.

Forest fairy: You can put it in the backpack or in plastic bag or in pockets. Wherever. Just take it down with you.

Big pirate: What would you do if you hike and you see a plastic wrap of a chocolate on the floor. It is not yours. Somebody just threw it there.

Almost everyone: Pick it up.

Big pirate: How loud can we be when hiking?

Sunny kid: Like we are on a visit. ANIMALS LIVE IN THE FORESTS AND IN THE MOUNTAINS. WE MUST NOT SCARE THEM. WE NEVER SCREAM.

Forrest fairy: It is possible to trigger an avalanche if you are too loud.

Little constructor: AND WE MUST NEVER PUSH ROCKS DOWN OR THROW STONES.

Brainstormer: Yes, cause we can´t see where it lands.

Sunny kid: And sometimes we can not even see the path below and the rock could fall on someones head. Bonk. And the rocks roll down faster and faster.

Forest fairy: If it hits someone, straight to hospital then. Not good.

Quiet fire starter: We could also hurt an animal this way. Cause they are hiding and then they run when they hear someone and we can´t see them if they are hurt.

Sunny kid: Another rule is that WE MUST ALWAYS HELP OTHER PEOPLE, OTHER HIKERS. If we can help. If we can´t we must call help.

Brainstormer: Someone must stay with the person if he is injured and the other go and find someone to help.

Little constructor: Or call the mountain rescue.

Big pirate: So if we meet someone stuck in snow waist deep, do we just pass him and say hi and comment on how deep he fell? Or what?

Kids: Noooooooooooooo

Sunny kid: I would take the shovel or ice axe. Or find something else and dig him out.

Little constructor: Or we could pull him out all together.

Brainstormer: If a kid is injured we need to calm him down. Before the rescuers come. Just sit with that person and tell him that help is coming and everything will be ok.

Forest fairy: I would run for help really quick. Find his parents. Or other adults.

Big pirate: All right. Any other rules we should know when visiting mountains?

Sunny kid: My grandfather always said to my mum, that you should NEVER GO TO HIGH MOUNTAINS WITHOUT A HAT, GLOVES AND A WATERPROOF JACKET. Even if it is summer. Weather can change in 5 minutes. You can freeze.

Brainstormer ( laughing ) : Umbrella. Take an umbrella. You can have it for rain or sun. Or slide down on it.

Forest fairy: And food. We need food. Like little chocolate bars!!! And water!

Little constructor: And first aid kit. ALWAYS CARRY FIRST AID KIT.

Forest fairy: IT IS POLITE TO SAY HELLO TO EVERYONE.

Big pirate: Would you share your water if you would meet someone really thirsty, maybe even dehydrated? He needs water urgently.

Kids: Yes!

Big pirate: Even if it means that you do not have enough to make it to the top and then back safely? Would you turn around without reaching the peak if it was necessary? Even if you tried hard to come up there?

Kids: Yes!

Brainstormer: Maybe we could find some water somewhere. A stream.

Big pirate: Is it necessary to tell someone where you are going? Before you go hiking?

Forest fairy: Yes! For safety.

Sunny kid: Yes. So people know where to look for you, if something happens. An accident or something. ALWAYS TELL SOMEONE WHERE YOU ARE GOING AND SIGN THE BOOKS ON PEAKS AND IN THE HUTS.

Big pirate: So, do you like hiking?

Kids: Yeeees!

Big pirate: Is it hard following the rules?

Little constructor: Sometimes.

Big pirate: Do you remember anything else? Maybe about paths and trails?

Sunny kid: I think it is not allowed, or it is NOT GOOD TO WALK OUTSIDE THE PATH. To take shortcuts. Even if sometimes you want to. It is better for nature to stay on the trails.

Big pirate: Thank you guys for this awesome interview. Do you want to go down now?

Kids: Yeeeeeees!!!!

We made it down safe and sound, little bit tired and very happy.
